My clients agree with the Forrester report, and this reflects what I have been seeing for a year.
Future deployment of Web-NFS product, LDAP, network computers, and intranets could make the whole concept of a NOS obsolete in a few years.
I have clients that don't use any network operating systems. They deploy large systems with client/server based code, intranet servers for corporate communications, and network-ready printers for use with PC-based application software.
A good intranet solution (with news, mail, html, documents) is simple, elegant, cost-effective, and scalable from the mainframe down to desktop servers. This is the future, not a NOS, regardless of the vendor or market share. |
