I located this old news from Telechoice on the Atcatel solution:

telechoice.com

"June 24, 1996-- Alcatel Telecom today announced the Alcatel 1000ADSL modem which is being introduced at Supercomm 96. Alcatel is the first with a combined DMT and ATM solution for central offices, something both Ameritech and Bell Atlantic have indicated a desire for. The system relies on the installation of a 25.6 Mbps ATM PCI network interface card in a customer PC. This card is attached to the 1000ADSL modem.

Alcatel has conducted successful testing of its ADSL system with Advanced Telecommunications Modules Limited (ATML) of Cambridge, England. The two companies are demonstrating a complete server-to-terminal link at Supercomm 96. Alcatel is says the system will be available in the fourth quarter of 1996. This includes an
ADSL modem, plug in board for PC, and the accompanying software driver to run internet applications without modification. While the initial system relies on ATM NICs, future versions will feature integrated ethernet interfaces.

Alcatel developed the chipset independently and will sell the chipset as a separate product. It states that the chip is standards-compliant with ANSI T1.413 and the company is pursuing interoperability agreements with other companies. It hopes the system will support higher speed technologies such as VDSL in the future."
