Even with follow-up work, there are problems. I have noticed a couple of problems in papers:

1) Follow-up work rarely tries to reproduce exactly the same, which sometimes produces wrong conclusions in the short run (but hopefully better results in the long run)

2) Much information digging is done by following references, which often gives a kind of tree-like information search. You start at a couple of branches, and find everything down to the roots from these branches. But some important sidebranches are often ignored.

3) The system doesn't feature the kind of review/comment system found in a lot of internet publishing. So even when there are 10000 readers to a piece of paper, and 50 of them may have good comments on it, there may be no quick follow-up that is highly visible. For instance, I think I have seen 4 different translations of the original APACHE II article's parameter boundary values to the main European measurement units, which all translated to different and wrong values... but none of the published places allowed me to comment that. The error is small, but it is annoying that the measurement unit conversion is not done the same way by all.
