I thought some may feel that way but my opinion has nothing to do with their political views. There are plenty of political and religious views with which I disagree with more than conservatism that are not rooted in mental deficiency.

If you wish, I can list several academic studies by well respected scientists that all indicate conservatism is rooted in fear and inability to deal with uncertainty. Intuitively this makes sense. If you have a hard time dealing with uncertainty, then you will do your best to preserve the status quo to keep life as familiar to you as possible. i.e. you'd become a conservative. You would fight to preserve your "traditional" society regardless of whether or not that is a good thing because you are more afraid of change than eager to reap the benefits that it may bring. Unfortunately for the conservatives, Life is inherently risky and uncertain.

PS Research shows that one of the indicators of if a person is conservative is how startled they get when hearing a sudden loud noise. This is only a small example of research into conservatism. Others have used MRI or have sifted through 50 years of conservative political writings around the world and have all come to the same conclusions.
