DAK,

"Saw George Will on his Sunday morning news show saying: "Free trade hurts certain groups in the economy" which is like Marx admitting that free enterprise isnt all bad."

As anyone who has ever got past Ec 10 must know, the issue isn't that there are both winners and losers (which there certainly are to almost all economic policies), but whether the net gain to society is such that the winners can afford to compensate losers so that we are all made better off.

Now it seems that even the interests of Pakistani children, who weave some of the finest rugs in the world, must be considered. Is it paternalistic or an affront on the perogatives of sovereignty to preach to LDCs about issues like what is the age that children ought attain before they may produce export goods? Is it incongrous to insist on protections for intellectual property but not for human rights, child labor practices or the environment? Is it reasonable to suggest that there should be a universal age for child labor strictures to apply for all countries, whether "developed" or "developing"? How might it have affected the economic growth of the developed nations if they were told to ascribe to such standards perhaps 100 years ago when we were at a comparable level of economic development?
