Yes, Fuchi, this is the IDT thread, and although your comments are welcome when they are about IDT, please post Cyrix related items to the Cyrix/NSM thread. On the other hand, IDT posters shouldn't get too hung up about hearing what the competitive arguments are. The test of the C6 & C6+'s success will be whether it provides good features and value and fits a few sets of requirements at least as good as alternatives. The MediaGX is a very competitive MPU and is the trend setter for integrated MPU "systems on a chip". However, it is still relatively slow compared to other Pentium class chips and has limitations in it's graphics capabilities. It also requires a custom designed motherboard and is not socket 7 or slot 1 compatible. Therefore it's only useful to VARs or OEMs willing to adopt its unique motherboard requirements. Nonetheless, the MediaGX will be worthy competition in the consumer market. At least partly due to the GX's success, all other alternative MPU manufacturers now plan to incorporate core 3-D graphics and other capabilities in their next generation MPU's.
The reason why IDT's stock price has not yet rallied is, IMO, because of two main things; 1] the market for high-tech stocks is lousy, and 2] IDT is late to the game with their introduction of the C6, and although it has an admirable feature set, it faces more established competition than it would have just six months ago. Sales prospects and ability to ramp production with high yields look very promising but they are not yet assured. The movement of the stock price waits on the showing of some results in production and sales of the C6 and indication that other products are hitting their stride. |
