It could come down to a question of semantics. COMS/USRX was indeed a merger by two measurements: 1) nearly equal parties; and 2) stock for stock. It may will be the last big merger, since anything Lucent does would probably be viewed as an acquisition, and I don't see COMS or CSCO merging with anyone. But, anything is possible.

I thought the speculation of T entering the affray an interesting albeit unlikely possibility. I hadn't thought of that. I think the article missed another player: DSC Communications. If we take the view that telecom and datacom are on convergent paths, many more possible combinations come into play.
