The more experience you have, the better a designer you are. Like you said, you've been doing it for 15 years so you've made most of the mistakes already and know how to avoid them. Most good software engineers have been coding since they were 12--by the time they graduate college (if they bother) they have 10 years experience. Compare that to a hardware engineer who graduates with maybe one summer job under his belt.
