Mine in East Kimberley a step closer

The Kimberley Metals Group is a step closer to developing an iron ore mine near Pompeii's Point in the East Kimberley, after eight months of negotiations with the Kimberley Land Council.

The council has worked with the company to broker an employment deal for the traditional land owners, the Lumugal people.

The mine will employ up to 60 workers and the company has promised up to 40 per cent of its jobs will be given to Aboriginal people when it begins production next year.

Wayne Bergmann from the council says the agreement will equip local Aboriginal people with a wide range of skills.

"Right across the scale, so basically from the labour on the ground to the operator right through to the trucking and all the mechanisms in this production line of getting the iron ore into the ships," he said.

Mr Bergmann says the company is committed to giving back to the local Indigenous community.

"They're prepared to commit to a range of targets and those targets increase as the years go by, going up to about 40 per cent employment but the major contracts also require, as part of letting of those contracts, Indigenous job opportunities," he said.
