NHC: Hurricane Watch Issued For Much Of North Carolina Coast

Last update: 8/31/2010 5:15:52 PM
DOW JONES NEWSWIRES

A hurricane watch was issued Tuesday for much of North Carolina's Atlantic coast as Category 4 Earl churned its way northwest toward the U.S. eastern seaboard, the National Hurricane Center reports in its 5 p.m. EDT bulletin.

The hurricane watch is in effect from north of Surf City up to North Carolina's border with Virginia, including Pamlico and Albemarle sounds. A tropical storm watch was issued for the area from Cape Fear, N.C., northeast to Surf City. Hurricane Earl, currently located about 1,000 miles south-southeast of Cape Hatteras, N.C., is projected to lash the state's coast Friday.

Earl is heading toward the northwest at 14 miles per hour and is expected to make a gradual turn toward the north-northwest on Wednesday.

The storm's sustained wind speeds were still hitting 135 miles per hour, with hurricane-strength winds extending up to 90 miles from the eye of the storm. Earl is forecast to remain a Category 4 hurricane for the next day or two.

Meanwhile, Fiona has been categorized as a minimal tropical storm, according to the NHC. The storm is about 270 miles east of the Leeward Islands, moving west-northwest at 24 miles per hour. The projected path has it staying to the east of Earl in the open Atlantic.
