not wild wild west lazzez faire where externalized costs are paid by ratepayers/taxpayers and resulting unmerited supranormal profits are consumed by inside stakeholders..... The last two times the big financials were deregulated (S&L's in the 80's and repealing Glass-Steagall in the 2000's) the result was gross bubbles that cost everyone huge amounts of money to fix. Pursuing profits at the expense of everyone else in the country is not a viable economic policy. IOW, CDO-squareds that obscure and falsify risk levels so that bankers can make huge profits are a really dumb idea. That's already proven by recent events.
