This article makes a good point about average selling prices

As noted in Barron's by the analysts commenting on Intel, it is a decline of 10% in average selling price that is sufficient to harm Intel's margins.

We are seeing incredible price discounts on computer systems. Believe what you want, but those computer stores are begging Compaq for sub $1000 systems to sell for Christmas.
