To a teleological fan club member, this idea is pointless nihilism <When you get to the point where you can choose to have a thought (or not), then we are getting somewhere ..... though there is nowhere to get to >

Of course there is somewhere to get to. That's why we are on our way. It's true that we don't know where we're going, but we're on our way. People are trying all sorts of directions - all possible directions. One of them is bound to be the right way. When somebody seems to be on the right track, the crowds soon go crowding in. Unfortunately, they are often just crowding into the next bubble of hope and expectation only to be once again let down back to the prosaic reality of a struggle for existence.

<Why is it a competition? The chimpanzee would not be obsessed with winning, and a rock would likely still be around after all your progeny have come and gone. > Limited resources. The winner gets there first or at least escapes to fight again another day. Rocks just go downhill and get ground to dust. People can go uphill - all the way to the Moon if they like.
