Thanks, that followup on the use of turmeric in Indian cooking is most interesting.

One question that has puzzled me: why do spices taste the way they do? Then I recently read about the evolution of wild chili peppers in the Mexican desert. As best I recall, the seeds need to be planted in the shade of a certain shrub in order to germinate and grow. This is accomplished by a bird that likes to roost in the shrubs, under which it deposits the seeds in the bird droppings. Apparently the hot chili flavor discourages small mammals from eating the fruit and depositing the seeds elsewhere where they cannot grow, whereas birds do not sense the same taste.

From this I would gather that chickens would not taste the turmeric in my previously-mentioned example, and regard it as just another seed.
