Signs of bad news: Technology Brief -- MCAFEE ASSOCIATES INC.:
New Software Suite Aimed At Businesses Is Planned

Wall Street Journal

McAfee Associates Inc., Santa Clara, Calif., will ship a new software suite for businesses late this month, Chief Executive Bill Larson said in an interview. The McAfee Enterprise suite includes six new pieces of software for encrypting data, keeping out viruses, verifying the identity of a computer user and backing up files on a corporate network. The suite runs only on Microsoft Corp.'s Windows NT, but parts of the suite can also run on Novell Inc.'s NetWare and Unix, an
industry standard. McAfee will formally announce the products Sept. 18. Mr. Larson said McAfee optimized the suite to run on NT because recent industry data shows that NT is growing in popularity. It is expected to sit on roughly one-third of server computers by the year 2000, up from 16% last year, McAfee said.
