If you'll notice, in addition to the "goal" of production qualified tools
by 2004, there is a very strong underlying theme of the extreme
difficulty in attempting to meet this schedule. It is possible that
one or more of the technologies may reach this goal, but the most
realistic scenario is that optics will continue to be used until the
pain/cost level exceeds the risk of the new technology(ies). OR,
there is a fundamental breakthrough in one of the NGL
technologies that provides a strategic cost advantage to the
semiconductor manufacturers.
