I would agree that most discussion about analysts tends to focus on their estimates for this quarter's earnings and also on this year's. I think that what the analysts would have you bet on though, if you read them closely, is the direction for the next year.

While I admit that some analysts also have a short term focus and publish short term recommendations, I think most recommendations are for the next 12 months. I know this isn't true for Technicians, but then I don't consider them Analysts <g>.

My guess is that since they are basing their analysis on fundamental data, and stock movement in the short term depends on so much more than fundamentals, they are much safer, and more likely to be correct in the longer term.

I also agree that there are many SI posters with a long term horizon (I like to think I am one), but they tend to post less frequently. This makes sense, really. If one has a long term view, one doesn't get as excited/disappointed about most daily events (though keeping an eye out for those events likely to have long term effects keeps us lurking).
