John,

From your link to the IBM announcement:

"According to IBM, the breakthrough, called Giant Magnetoresistive (GMR) heads, could boost storage density on drive platters to more than 10 billion bits per square inch."

From PTIS 1996 annual report:

"Future thin film heads, referred to as GMR and CMR, will also require dry etching and plasma deposition systems in their fabrication processes. Plasma-Therm's Versalock 700 systems are currently installed in volume MR thin film head manufacturing lines and are expected to continue their successful market penetration."

If your question is, will this hurt PTIS, I'd say it would appear to be no, and on the contrary could be beneficial.
