The figure comes from 2001...The Christian Encyclopedia. Yes...it IS a lot of sects--and a couple of billion people absolutely certain of what they imagine to be the TRUTH. Every single one of them smarter and more knowledgeable than everybody else...and they usually only need to skim a few salient (to them) points out of one single solitary book!

No education in philosophy or science required. Merely the capacity to believe in talking donkeys and a world where the light from the sun does not create rainbows--and thousands of other absurdities, cruelties, and contradictions.

When facts are the last thing necessary to deal with, it is (of course) not surprising to find 38,000 different sects disputing imaginary meaning--and dividing people between Heaven and Hell (for ETERNITY :-)) on the basis of whether or not they dipped in a bit of water or some other such nonsense.

religioustolerance.org

"There are on the order of 1,200 Christian organizations in North America, and over 30,000 in the world.

Their names range from the Amish to The Way.

We have essays describing some of them.
