>>This the first year of the Android surge. It is obviously hitting Rimm at Verizon and other us carriers and will do the same to Iphones...because what made the Iphone so great was the browsing experience...and that advantage is gone.<<

The first phone to hit the market running Android was the HTC dream, in 2008. So I'm not sure about this being the first year of the Android surge. I'd say the surge has been going on for at least the past year and a half.

It's true that the browsing experience on the iPhone was one of the early selling points. But of course, that was before the phone ran all those cool apps. And that was never the only selling point.

Android has made it easy for any company to make decent smartphones, but it takes real innovation, fanatical attention to detail, and brilliant design to make a great smartphone.

As for market dominance, perhaps because it gets so much attention, the iPhone can be seen as a market leader. But it hasn't ever gotten above twenty-something percent of the smartphone market. IPhone sales continue to increase at a rapid clip, so I don't think market share is an issue. The smartphone market overall continues to grow. Apple can grow sales even while losing some percentage points in market share.
