If you watch the hour show on the Normandy landing that has been running on the Military channel lately, they make a very good case that the diversion of the 500 Rangers from Pointe du Hoc to the Omaha beach is what saved the landing. We certainly do need trained assault troops.

The difference starts with intelligence.

Another good example of this was at the Battle of the Bulge. The American combat engineers held up the German advance so much that the German Combat Commander referred to them as "those damn engineers!"
