If the Justice Dept. allows Microsoft to incorporate their browser into the operating system it will put Netscape in the same position that apple was put in when Gates and company copied the MAC OS and created windows. If they allow them to incorporate the browser they should also force them to incorporate all their other currently separate applications and then everyone would find out what a pig all their code actually adds up to. If not for Intel pushing the speed barrier, Microsoft would be dead. Microsoft actually needs Java to simplify and enhance their existing code. Java is what could even the playing field and Microsoft and Intel knows it. Microsoft has already bastardized Java with their own proprietary code and if Suns legal actions fail (which they probably will) they will continue to do so.. To put the shoe on the other foot, would Microsoft have given up control of windows as a standard in the midst of its popularity like they insist Sun does with Java? Would they give up control of windows today to make it a standard along with Java for the benefit of the entire technology community? If Bill Gates has such a vision for the future of computing and what it could do to advance every aspect of life, then why doesn't he really do something to benefit that vision? Maybe he hasn't made quite enough money yet or maybe that vision he has isn't really all he makes it out to be.
