And the hedge fund managers are a tiny portion of the rich. Your treating them almost as if they where the whole, or the overwhelming majority of the rich. If you really want to bash hedge fund managers specifically, while propose policies that attack a much broader group? That's an awful lot of collateral damage (even more when you consider that the economy in general is harmed by high tax rates).

.What is the social redeeming value of a hedge fund

1 - Who cares? If people want to pay them what business is it of yours? Pay isn't about and shouldn't be about your or anyone else's estimate of how much "socially redeeming value" someone provides.

2 - They manage investments. If they do a good job they provide a good return for their clients, and generally would make investing in the US more productive. If they do a lousy job, their problem is that they aren't doing their job well enough, not the basic nature of their job, or the fact that they have high compensation.
