In obsessing over taxes, you are missing the bigger picture. Germany's government provides a lot of services to their citizens, such as medical insurance, disability benefits, and unemployment insurance, which frees their businesses from having to pay the costs of those services. This means that even though they are paying their workers more, Germany's business are globally competitive.

And yes, the income of those workers is taxed at a higher rate than ours. Which works out pretty well for them, since they never have to worry about things like being bankrupted by illness.
