O'Donnell is another "canary in the coal mine" for us on Nov 2. If she is even close in the early returns it will be a Republican landslide.
Delaware Tonight September 14, 2010 9:30 P.M. By Kathryn Jean Lopez
People will focus on O’Donnell for obvious reasons. But I think the real story, and the point Rush and others were getting at is: The results tonight in Delaware are about Mike Castle. He had an R. after his name, but he might as well have been a Democrat. Voters want authenticity. That’s why Murkowski lost. That’s why Castle lost.
DeMint on O'Donnell September 14, 2010 9:46 P.M. By Daniel Foster
Sen. Jim DeMint has released the following statement following the victory of Christine O'Donnell in Delaware:
"I want to congratulate Christine on her remarkable victory tonight," said Senator DeMint. "She came from behind and won this race because of her unwavering support for the principles of freedom. She wasn't afraid to stand up to the establishment and she overcame some pretty nasty attacks."
I also want to thank the thousands of grassroots conservatives in Delaware and around the country who worked so hard to make this possible. Without their support, Christine would not have been able to do it.
"Now it's time for all Republicans to unite behind Christine so she can go on to win in November. If she is elected, she will join a growing group of new leaders in the Senate who will stand up to the big spenders in both parties and help us take our country back."
Where O’Donnell Stands September 14, 2010 10:15 P.M. By Daniel Foster
Here are the facts:
–Christine O’Donnell has $20,374 cash-on-hand. Chris Coons has $944,230. O’Donnell will surely see cash come in after tonight but. . .
–CNN’s Mark Preston quotes an unnamed GOP official: “Until she demonstrates some viability in the polls we are not going to have any money for her.” The official said it is now incumbent on Jim DeMint, Sarah Palin, and the Tea Party Express to support O’Donnell. “They got her here.”
–From a Public Policy Poll on the Delaware general scheduled to drop tomorrow AM:
* Only 31% of Delaware voters think Christine O’Donnell is fit to hold public office. * O’Donnell’s favorable/unfavorable split is 29/50. * Castle primary voters supports Coons over O’Donnell 44-28 in the general election.
–Stu Rothenberg of Rothenberg Political Reports has already moved the Delaware Senate race from Lean Republican to Lean Democratic, bypassing toss-up all together.
–O’Donnell’s victory, paired with a win by Ovide LaMontagne in New Hampshire, reduces the GOP’s chance of taking the Senate from 30 percent to 16 percent, according to the most accurate model going.
Scott Brown didn’t have a chance of beating Martha Coakley in December 2009, and we know how that worked out. So goodness knows, anything can happen in Delaware.
But it sure looks like the First State is preparing to send Washington another vote for Harry Reid.
When I Said Good Luck, I Meant It September 14, 2010 11:14 P.M. By Daniel Foster
I hope Christine O'Donnell beats Chris Coons. And though I'll probably continue to report poll numbers etc. that O'Donnell diehards don't want to hear, I'm done editorializing.
Interestingly, my reader e-mails have been just as divided and divisive as this primary. The Castle folks tell me they are disappointed not just because they see a decreased chance of winning in the general, but because — even if Castle was to the left of where they'd like him to be — they generally like him as a dude, and trusted him to make the best choice for Delaware more often than not.
The O'Donnell supporters have urged me to get behind the winner (fair enough), respect the will of primary voters in Delaware (more than fair enough), and shut up (fairest of all). There was also a pretty high-frequency of the words "sore-loser," "cry-baby," and "RINO. |
