This SS perception is being driven by republicans - and their PR seems to be working. The SS system is flush with cash - huge balances of money paid by working men and women that has then been borrowed by the government to do crap like run wars. The system is in balance until the year 2040 or something like that and to make it stay balanced way longer it just needs an occasional twinking. It is the one - perhaps the only government account that is on solid footing. You need to look at your pay stub to get an understanding of how much money is going into SS. Don't bye into that fear mongering of conservatives!
