A grid across the whole of the continent, would still be all under a nighttime sky for hours every day even on the Summer solstice.

And even when its in day time you would have some reductions from days with wide spread clouds. At least that (unlike nighttime) can be dealt with by having a lot of extra capacity and a huge investment in transmission capability, but doing so really packs on the cost.

As for storage mechanisms, I refer back to the question I raised before. How are you going to store hundreds of terrawatt hours of electricity? "Rolling out" doesn't imply or suggest that it scales to anywhere close to what would be needed. As for "right now", right now without subsidies we wouldn't be getting solar power anywhere close to the level we are getting it, and the current level is rather tiny in terms of percentage of kw/hours produced.
