Today's replacement windows (insulated, Low-E glass) do offer much better energy efficiency over the old single pane or even last gen thermal style. However, even with the tax credit they are pricey. I'd be sure I was staying in the house a long time before investing in them. They just don't have that much resale punch as you would get with a new kitchen.
