ISSI FORMS New Embedded Memory Division; Introduces High-Speed Specialty SRAM
Virtual Dual Port SRAM Simplifies System Design and Layout
SANTA CLARA, Calif., Nov. 10 /PRNewswire/ -- Integrated Silicon Solution, Inc. (Nasdaq: ISSI - news) today announced the Embedded and Specialty Product (ESP) division, chartered with development of ISSI's embedded memory standard product line. Headquartered in Vancouver, Washington, the division is headed by Bruce Campbell, ISSI's vice president of strategic programs.
''The formation of the ESP division, with its logic design capability, adds to ISSI's overall technology prowess,'' Campbell said. ''When melded with ISSI's traditional excellence in high speed memory processing and design knowledge, the result is an industry-leading embedded memory capability. ''We will use this unique combination to develop very high performance specialty and standard memory architectures with I/O sections developed for specific system interfaces. Particular emphasis will be placed on support for high-speed DSPs and advanced bus techniques.''
Also today, the ESP division unveiled the IS82C600 -- code named Trailblazer -- a 64K x 16 asynchronous CMOS SRAM with Virtual Dual Port architecture. Trailblazer makes use of ISSI's very fast SRAM memory technology, and an advanced architecture to provide the high speeds needed by advanced DSPs and controllers. It is the first product in a line of specialized and embedded memories ISSI will design for OEMs developing high-frequency DSP systems such as wireless base stations, high-density modems and high-end voice and audio systems.
''Trailblazer is a versatile DSP system building block and, although it is ideal for a wide variety of markets, our networking and telecommunications customers will find it especially cost-effective,'' Campbell said. ''Many of our customers have struggled to support the new high-frequency DSPs with conventional SRAMs. Like backside cache for microprocessors, ISSI's two-ported Trailblazer provides an architectural solution to the problems of high frequency design.
''Furthermore, we also found that, when using multiple processors, our customers were combining random logic and standard SRAMs to create dual-ported memory arrays. The Trailblazer's Virtual Dual Port architecture provides a clean, cost-effective solution for multiple processor implementations.''
Trailblazer Overview
While ISSI's Trailblazer can be used to replace standard high speed 64K x 16 SRAMs, its unique features and ''Virtual Dual Port'' architecture simplifies 16-bit DSP-based system design and layout. It features a primary port for a point-to-point connection to the DSP and a secondary port that allows the DSP to access additional devices without any performance penalty on the primary port. This can provide no-wait-state performance up to 133 MHz, depending upon DSP memory timing.
By reducing the loading on the DSP memory bus, Trailblazer extends the frequency range at which no-wait-state memory accesses can be achieved. This enables system designers to get maximum performance from the new 80, 100 and 120 MHz DSPs.
Trailblazer is referred to as a ''Virtual Dual Port'' because its design incorporates very economical and high-speed standard SRAM cells. The embedded SRAM can be accessed from both ports, however, unlike traditional dual ports, access can't be simultaneous. This Virtual Dual Port operation meets the needs of most systems, while providing the costs, performance and economies of scale of standard SRAMs.
Availability Package and Price
Shipments of Trailblazer will begin in December 1997. The device is available in 119-pin BGA packaging and is priced at $12 in quantities of 10,000.
