OT ... Obesity, smoking, excessive alcohol consumption etc tend to reduce life expectancy significantly and thus reduce old age pension costs.
I often wonder which is costlier? Health care or pensions? Never found any stats on it.

Alcohol tax to fund the cop shop?
Why penalize responsible alcohol consumption? Why not simply increase the DUI fines 10-fold or whatever and make them install these breathalyser car start gismos? BTW, no point in throwing offenders into jail just for DUI. Only costs more taxpayers’ money. Alternatively, throw them into jail but charge them to be there. $150 per day sounds about right. <g>

BTW, I live in Canada where alcohol and smokes are already taxed to the hilt. Doesn’t seem to affect consumption according to most stats I have seen.
