In elections it is always a choice between a few candidates. If your choice is between someone who you think will vote the way you want and improve the situation and someone who will vote against your wishes and make the situation worse, the factors you mention become secondary.

Now if the choice is between two candidates who will vote your way then those issues become more important.

For example, I believe Hank Paulson produced revenue, paid taxes and made his own money, but I wouldn't want him in government. Not because I believe him to be dumb, but since I believe the interests he represents are bad for U.S. and he will word for those interests, the other doesn't matter.

By the way your position on O'Donnell suggests that you think Welfare Moms would all be bad candidates. Am I wrong?

Also, I would remind you some very successful people have gone through difficult times.
