( BW)(MAPINFO)(MAPS) MapInfo Corporation Announces
Certification of SpatialWare Datablade Module for
INFORMIX-Universal Server

Business/Technology Editors

TROY, N.Y.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Nov. 10, 1997--

The first Spatial DataBlade module to pass INFORMIX's rigorous
quality and database integrity standards

MapInfo Corporation (NASDAQ:MAPS), the pioneer and market leader in spatial information
discovery solutions, today announced that the company's SpatialWare DataBlade module is the
first Spatial DataBlade to meet the stringent standards for certification on the
INFORMIX(R)-Universal Server database. MapInfo's SpatialWare Datablade(R) module snaps
easily into Informix's extendable database, enabling organizations to use location, proximity and
spatial analysis as part of their universal server applications.
SpatialWare is MapInfo's powerful server technology that stores and manages complex spatial
data in corporate relational database servers for spatial SQL-based querying. With the SpatialWare
Datablade module on INFORMIX-Universal Server, users can now employ the power of spatial
analysis in the database environment, assuring the integrity of the data and providing better access
to information through data visualization and spatial analysis.
"MapInfo is proud to be the first Datablade partner to meet the rigorous standards set by
Informix," said George Moon, vice president of engineering, MapInfo Corporation. "We believe
that through the close collaboration of our engineering teams, we have achieved the highest levels
of quality, consistency and interoperability."
David Hornbeck, president of ALS Technologies, Inc., a spatial solutions company located in
Northridge, California, which specializes in distribution planning and restructuring of branch
networks for financial institutions, commented, "The flexibility of INFORMIX-Universal Server
combined with SpatialWare's 130 spatial functions is an extraordinarily powerful geographical
engine and a technological breakthrough." According to Hornbeck, standard databases in the
marketplace are not organized to take geography into account. He added, "With SpatialWare on
INFORMIX-Universal Server, I can define my own datatypes using a six-to-eight line spatial
query and get genuine spatial information back in the form of a meaningful map."
Jim Root, vice president of Thompson Associates in Ann Arbor, Michigan, explained that his
company supports a variety of GIS and demographic databases and seeks to support these on a
common, more powerful data warehouse represented by the INFORMIX-Universal Server. He
said, "We are a retail location firm with about 70 professionals accessing data from numerous
databases. We need the consistency of common definitions, data types and other similar
advantages offered by the INFORMIX-Universal Server. SpatialWare provides a significant piece
of our total strategy." He added, that by moving in this direction, his company is establishing the
infrastructure needed to serve its western regional office in California and clients throughout the
country.
