Sure. And all that ongoing research on fusion hasn't stopped other research from occurring, has it?

Of course there are no guarantees. The fact that we may want to develop thorium reactors doesn't mean it's necessarily going to happen. The problem I have with that article is that the author seems to think that we shouldn't even try. I think the reasons he gives for not trying are bogus.
