When I read that quote, it was like dealing with an alien from another world. He would have been a moderate Dem in 2010. It must have been the civil rights movement coupled with the Vietnamese war that set Rs on a different track. After all, the positions of Nixon were not as far right as Rs now.

Well, do note that the John Birch Society said that Eisenhower was a Communist, and a significant swath of the Tea Party movement is descended from the John Birch Society.


Yes, that's one of the more annoying aspects of the Tea Party. The media makes it like they are something new but the reality is they have been around since at least Joe McCarthy. With each passing decade, only their name changes...from a McCarthite to the John Birch to the silent majority to the moral majority to the religious right to the Tea Party. And with every morphing, they get uglier.
