I "visited" Detroit a couple years back. I thought: how bad can it be? Maybe the media just exaggerates. Maybe it's not as toxic as they say. Maybe in fact it's some kind of multicultural paradise on earth.

Was there with a pal. We're big guys and know how to take care of ourselves. So we just drove into the city and started poking around. What could go wrong?

A lot. Let me tell you: downtown Beirut in the middle of a friggen civil war would be safer (and cleaner) than Detroit. I've never seen such hostility and outright menace in my life, and I've been in some real 3rd world hellholes.

We walked into a restaurant - and then 10 seconds later walked out. It was clear that if we stayed there they'd be hauling us out in body bags along with the rest of the garbage. It was that dangerous.

Filth and destruction everywhere. Aimless drunks everywhere. Hard stares everywhere. What a mess.

At night we heard automatic fire in the distance. And it went on for a long time. You can be sure it wasn't the police.

I think everyone should visit Detroit. Educational.
