Roger,
With all due respect, I disagree with you about the purpose of a PR/IR firm. Their purpose is not merely to pump up the price of a stock in the short term. Their mission is to get the word out to investors of all variety including instituions that there is a story here. A company can do great things with their business but if nobody on Wall Street has heard of them, it will not benefit the shareholders, including the long term shareholders. If a company is not being covered, you will typically see it trading at a low multiple. PR/IR firms can add value to the shareholder's investments by increasing awareness. Keep in mind, I am not referring to the many scab PR firms out there whose business is sending out 10 million form letters to evryone in America that wind up in the garbage. I am referring to well established and connected firms that can actually go on the road and draw the institutions, mutual funds, etc. to a presentation and convey the story.
