In other words, one generally does not see colleges or military units assigning a man and woman to live and sleep together in the same room, shower together, or change their gym clothes together. Likewise, Wal-Mart does not require men and women to use the same restroom.


That's the case here in the United States. Or at least, it used to be. Recently, co-ed dorms with co-ed rooms and unisex bathrooms have made their appearance on campuses nationwide.

In other countries, it's fairly common to find unisex dressing rooms. I once visited a hospital in the Netherlands where the OR staff shared the same dressing room. It was fairly common, according to my host, for the nurses to walk around topless as the doctors changed into scrubs.
