Sanofi's Blood Vessel Drug Fails Trial

PARIS—French drug maker Sanofi-Aventis said Wednesday its experimental blood-vessel medicine NV1FGF failed to meet its target in a late-stage clinical trial.

The treatment failed in a Phase III study to demonstrate superiority compared to a placebo in preventing major amputation or death for patients of critical limb ischemia, Sanofi said. Critical limb ischemia is characterized by the obstruction of arteries which decreases blood flow to hands, legs and feet. Full results of the trial will be presented at the American Heart Association Congress on November 16 in Chicago.

NV1FGF was licensed by Sanofi from Vical Inc. Vical in 2007 said Sanofi expected to file the drug candidate for market approval sometime this year.

Sanofi said on Wednesday it is now evaluating all options on development of the treatment.

Analysts said the NV1FGF news was negative for Sanofi, albeit minor. "Even if it's disappointing, it's not a total surprise because we knew this project was risky," said Jean-Jacques Le Fur, analyst with Oddo Securities in a research note Wednesday. He had projected the drug's sales potential at €355 million ($469.8 million) a year.
