The sensor, which replaced film, is the key element of digital cameras. The typical DSLR sensor is 16 times as large as the typical consumer digital camera sensor. The largest market for the sensors is the mobile phone market. Consequently, that is where most of the research is directed. The result is that camera phone capability is increasing at the most rapid rate.
