I don't think there is a technical controversy.

Then your wrong. Not about the involvement of politics, there is a two way involvement with politics affecting economic opinion, and with economists' opinions affecting politics. Its a politically charged area of study. But the economic disagreements go back long before the current political situation, and exist independently of the politics. There are certain basics of economics that are nearly universally accepted outside the distant fringe, but the size of multiplier effect of government spending (or even the existence of it as something reliably positive) isn't one of them.
