We do plenty of property taxing. The estate tax is actually a great example of it, but conservatives scream bloody murder about it and this year it doesn't even exist at all.

Because that doesn't create a sustainable, reliable system. And Zuckerberg giving $100M is, first off, just a very small drop in the bucket of educational needs in this country. Second, it's a small portion of his net worth of $4 billion. I give away a larger percentage of my net worth every year than he does of his.
