As I said, I grew up a military "brat". I have had military people around me all my life, though I only spent 4 years in uniform myself.
Almost without except, the career people I've know, and with special emphasis on generals and admirals, are among the most dedicated, honest, and committed of any group of people I've met in my life.
Look, there are three personality-types involved here. Passives, aggressives, and passive-aggressivse. You passives are targets, victims of the aggressives, whether they be criminals, or foreigners who want to destroy your way of life. The passive-aggressives are like the sheep dog. They stand apart, and on the lookout for danger. They will without thought offer their own lives for the benefit of the flock. In people, these are the types you want in public service such as the military. Their aggression is controlled for the benefit of family and country, and they stand ready to do what the passives cower over when they have to think about it.
