Hawk,

Couple of points...

Democracy... Mr. Obama got elected with a bunch of priorities.. as a Canuck looking in it seems that no matter what he wants to get enacted ... (assuming no incompetence :O) by the time the two houses add all the earmarks.. legislation is almost unrecognizable from its original intent ... I'm not so sure democracy is really working... I've said before (Guess despite being a Conservative leaning Canuck... that's an American far lefty :O) Government in the US (and Canada to a lesser extent though) is not afraid of the people.. seems it thinks the people are their for its pleasure.. Chinese government fears its population... of that I am sure... there is a motivation issue in that thesis :O) It is not clear to me that Western style, at least North American flavours, democracy would be good for China.. I still think most of democratic governments spend far too much energy on getting elected and staying in power... effective leadership is way down on the priority list... They are not that motivated... This idea was kinda touched upon in a corporate sense by a speaker at the resource show I attended this weekend... specifically in the context of China vs North America..

Heard an interesting term this weekend.. We've reached peak colonies... very problematic for the West :O)

All big countries like to have a sphere of influence.. The times are a changing..
