Stocks of some stem-cell companies gained after news late Tuesday that a U.S. appeals court said the White House can continue to fund embryonic stem-cell research while it appeals an August injunction barring such funding. Geron Corp. (GERN, $5.49, +$0.06, +1.10%), StemCells Inc. (STEM, $0.81, +$0.04, +4.83%) and Aastrom Biosciences Inc. (ASTM, $1.55, +$0.03, +1.97%) all gained. Most companies may not be directly affected by the ruling because they don't rely on government funding, but sector has moved with the story in recent months as stocks will likely benefit from the field moving forward. ............
