Another Minority-Contracting Program Sees Waste, Corruption

The Washington Post today has a long, long front-page story about corruption, waste, inefficiency, and “unintended consequences” in a government-contracting program that gives special treatment to a minority group — in this case, Alaska natives. All true, I’m sure, but of course this has long been the case of minority-contracting programs, as history professor Jonathan J. Bean documents in Big Government and Affirmative Action: The Scandalous History of the Small Business Administration. Not to mention the fact that some of us are offended by government programs that sort people according to skin color and national origin in order to discriminate against some and favor others. As Andy McCarthy noted, it’s too bad the “Pledge to America” didn’t include something about good old equal protection of the laws.
