The irony of claiming to fight for freedom in foreign countries while bringing the iron fist down on dissent at home (i.e. antiwar demonstsrators as terrorists) has to have an effect on the US electorate of finally convincing them of the truth of the sad state of American politics. Which is to say, a corporate state with a tinge of neo-fascism.
