"Lots of businesses keep them on. As long as they are productive, and don't demand much higher compensation than other employees (or are more productive or useful than the other employees so as to support the higher compensation), than its in the interests of the business to do so. "

Why do you feel you have to disagree all the time....based on the answer above, it's clear you have no information on the topic other than your opinion..... You don't know what's going on with regard, especially, to large corp's.... And btw, they are expert at working around the age discrimination laws knowing that they will be nailed if they exceed a certain % of seniors in the layoffs.... They are also expert in forcing a high salaried employee to leave by giving them jobs they are unqualified to do and cutting them off from internal communications.... I know, I was trained in the technique.. Finally, a buy out is offered if the employee will sign a release saying he was not coerced into signing by being threatened with firing if he refused to sign... You will recall Lee Iacocca's situation when he lost the CEO position at Ford. He was fired, they just gave him and his secretary an office in some warehouse nearby....it didn't take long for him to quit. A real story of a Japanese engineer included freezing him out of the information circles and when he didn't quit they moved him to an office in the basement...he still wouldn't leave until they turned off his lights...
