I think Benen misunderstands the dynamics in the country right now. If you read him carefully, most of his columns contain some variation of the words 'I don't get it'. He presents what someone says or does, usually by cherry-picking quotes, and then dismisses the whole thing by saying some variation of 'crazy', 'stupid', 'looney' as well as 'I don't get it'. Now it may be that this pattern is just a rhetorical device...that's what I thought anyway. Now I'm thinking more it's that he really doesn't get it. Either he's not making the effort or he's letting other pundits inform his own opinion. As a result, it leaves him most of the time as just one more guy stuck in an echo chamber while the political landscape shifted under his feet.
