Here's the OEM agreement I was referring to. I don't know who manufactures what, but you can take solace in the fact that quantum offering DLT enterprise backup systems is a big plus for qntm.
qntm also has OEM agreements with IBM, HP, DELL, DEC. In other words qntm is making DLT the de facto standard.

MILPITAS, Calif., July 9, 1997 - Quantum Corporation (NMS: QNTM) announced today that Compaq Computer Corporation will offer Quantum's industry leading DLTT 7000 tape drive as an option with Compaq's enterprise servers and system storage products.
Combined with the DLTT 7000, Compaq offers a complete enterprise solution by providing high-availability, scalability and high-volume data integrity essential for today's backup requirements. The new Compaq 35/70 GB DLT drives are available in tabletop configurations, rack-mountable versions and storage array products.

About the Quantum DLT 7000 Products The DLT 7000 tape drive is Quantum's most recent offering in its renowned tape drive family. The DLT 7000 product provides an industry-leading capacity of 70 gigabytes (GB) (compressed) and a sustained data transfer rate of 10 megabytes (MB) (compressed)/second. The DLT 7000 tape drive features a SCSI-2 fast/wide interface with single-ended and differential options.
With regard to reliability, the stand-alone DLT 7000 tape drive features a head life of 30,000 hours, media durability of 1,000,000 tape passes, and an overall Mean Time Between Failures (MTBF) of 200,000 hours. The DLT 7000 drive is read and write compatible with all Quantum's previous generation DLT tape drives. In addition to providing backward compatibility with legacy DLT tape drives, DLT technology offers a well-defined path for future performance and capacity improvements that will ensure its longevity in the marketplace.
