X Terminals, whether PURE or emulated on a PC, are graphic display terminals for UNIX based networks/servers. UNIX applications, executed on an APPLICATION SERVER, squirt out a compact/efficient display info which is efficiently transferred down the network wires to the appropriate X-terminal. That X terminal processes the compact display instructions, and generates the bit patterns for the graphic display locally within the X-terminal.

How useful is this? What is the growth in UNIX application Servers?

In certain enginnering environments these are used quite extensively. But overall, this is a small market vis-a-vis the PC market and the Internet markets.
